In this article, the researchers review an incident by a military aircraft crew member where there was slow depressurization that brought the cabin pressure altitude to 18k MSL. The crew member at issue suffered a hypoxic condition with quicker onset and more severe symptoms than other crew members.
After significant investigation and health panels, it was discovered that the crew member had been taking a muscle building supplement. More research was done exposing the crew member to the muscle supplement in altitude chambers. It was determined that the supplement and energy drinks likely contributed to the more severe hypoxia in the crew member.
